“But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man.” Matthew 15:18
The Bible teaches that what we say is truly an indicator of what is in your heart. If our words bless and encourage others then this gives evidence that you have a compassionate heart. When we share the good news about Christ we demonstrate a heart that is grateful for our own salvation. When others are experiencing a trial in their life they should find comfort in our very words. Do your words reveal a compassionate heart? Do your words indicate a heart like the Heavenly Father?
We can hurt people because of critical words. So we must accept responsibility for what comes out of our mouth. A sanctified mouth is a wonderful instrument for the Lord. A heart like the Father’s heart will produce pure and loving words. We cannot and should not make excuses for our words. We must ask the Holy Spirit to forgive us if we have used words that have brought harm to someone. We must also ask Him to use our mouth as His instrument. We must ask Him to discipline our mouth so that every word we speak is used by God to edify others. I often pray this little prayer, “Father, put a watch over my mouth and keep the door of my lips. Help me not to speak unless spoken through.” I ask that you pray this simple but powerful prayer often in the coming weeks and see how God can transform your life in this area. God will help your speech to be edifying and uplifting to someone who may be in need of a comforting word. Have a great rest of the week and I look forward to seeing you Sunday morning!
