Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,” John 18: 8 (NKJV)
In John 18, Jesus was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane across the Kidron Valley from Jerusalem. The disciples of Jesus were there with Him as He partook of the cup that contained the sins of humanity in Luke 22. Judas shows up with a band of soldiers carrying weapons and torches. Jesus came to this earth for this very time. He knew what was happening. He stepped out from the shadows to meet them and asked the question, “Whom are you seeking?” They said “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said, “I am He,” and when He said this, all who came to accuse Him fell to the ground. This was the same “I Am” that met Moses in the burning bush and the same I Am that we read about in the Book of Revelation. Jesus said a second time, “Whom are you are seeking?” and they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” John 18:8 Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,”
Here we witness how much God loves us; take me, not them. He willingly laid down His life for ours. And the great news on this Easter is the story doesn’t end there. Three days later, just like those soldiers crumbled in the garden, death, hell, and the grave crumbled on the morning of the third day when Christ arose. Jesus once and for all declared, “I Am the resurrection and the life.”
